President’s Medal Recipients

Many people have been part of the proud history of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus University.  Alumni, faculty, and friends of the College helped establish PCO as a pioneer and leader in the field of optometric education and the profession of optometry. The following people - highlighted on Medal Mondays - were honored on May 20, 1995 at the 75th Anniversary Gala Celebration for their outstanding contributions to the College and the field of optometry and vision care.

At the Centennial Gala Celebration on April 27, 2019, additional alumni, faculty, and friends will be honored. 

Michael A. Carcaise, OD ’55

Michael A. Carcaise, OD ’55As a board member of the Pennsylvania Lions Club Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation, Dr. Michael Carcaise played an integral role in furthering research at the College. He served as District Governor of Lion International. In 1991, Dr. Carcaise received special recognition by the Alumni Association for his work within the Lions Foundation. He served as co-chairman of the Pennsylvania Lions Laser Center at Eye and Ear Hospital in Pittsburgh and helped raise money from state Lions Clubs to establish and equip the Center. He was awarded the Ambassador of Goodwill Medal, the highest award in Lionism. From Lions International and received many Lions sight conservation and eye research awards. He passed away in 1994.
