On Friday, March 16, University faculty participated in a rescheduled Development Day. The Role of Faculty in the Accommodation Process was presented by Salome Heyward, Esq. of Salome Heyward & Associates Conference Services.
Her lecture focused on the process of providing academic accommodations to students with needs that fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Heyward discussed common misunderstandings of the Act, reviewed case studies, and answered questions from faculty.
Heyward explained the impact of the ADA on technology used more commonly in classrooms such as online learning, or video and audio clips. She reminded attending faculty that the ADA was put into place to ensure the underlying problem is solved and that all sides are attended to. Heyward also stressed that it is essential for the University to understand and follow the deliberative process to identify and implement the roles of those involved in order to accommodate all sides legally.
After the lecture, faculty attended a social in the café. During the social, deans and directors from across the University introduced new members and acknowledged all of those who received scholarship awards.
