Cathy teaches courses in the areas of Early Childhood, Severe Disabilities, and Deafblindness. Her research interests include assessment of children with multiple disabilities including deafblindness, education of children who are deafblind, reduction of stress in children with severe multiple disabilities including deafblindness, and the use of visual supports with young children with autism. She consults nationally and internationally in the area of deafblindness and has provided long-term technical assistance to programs serving children with sensory impairments and multiple disabilities in Russia and Armenia. In addition, she has presented in the Netherlands, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, and Italy. Her work has been translated into Spanish, Russian, German, and Dutch.
