Michella Maiorana-Basas is a first year doctoral student at Michigan State University in the area of Deaf Education, and a recipient of the National Leadership Consortium in Sensory Disabilities Fellowship. Maiorana-Basas holds a BA in Deaf Education/ Elementary Education from Flagler College (2000), and a Masters in Special Education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (2007). Maiorana-Basas has been a teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing since 2000 in both Florida and Hawaii, where she served as a course facilitator for the Pacific Island Learning Initiative (PILI) in Deaf Education (a research project led by Dr. Claudia Pagliaro and Dr. Harold Johnson of MSU). Her research interests include Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in rural and isolated communities (specifically the Pacific Islands), as well as technology, literacy and linguistics.
