Come and witness the action!

It’s the moment we have all been waiting for! Intramural basketball is back in action tomorrow night and this will be the most anticipated season yet! A total of 119 players – 80 men and 39 women - will take the court this season, which is the most participants we have ever had.

In the Women’s League, we have the returning champions, Eye Ballers, coming back for their second season looking for a two-peat. Will they be able to take the court by storm again this year or will the new kids on the block from the first year class be able to take them?! Eye Candy will also be returning after a tough loss in last year’s championship game. Which of the four teams will have what it takes this season to be crowned champions?!

In the Men’s League this year there have been many exciting changes. The guys will be sporting new dri-fit material t-shirts, as well as team names for the first time ever. Also this year, we have our first combined Physician Assistant (PA) team, Ball Handlers, which consists solely of first and second year PA students. Our revamped FAPAS team this year will be Deciballs, which will consist of audiology students, an OT student, two employees of Salus University, a spouse, and a T.E.I. resident! Also returning this season are both of the teams that played against each other in last year’s championship game. Now current fourth year students, Eye Ballin’ 2014 will be combined as one team and it will be interesting to see if they will be able to play well with each other! Can a few members of the Class of 2014 three-peat this season as they can be seen as early favorites? As always anything is possible. We also have two new first year teams who have yet to show their talent and are eager to hit the court this season to shock the intramural realm!

Week 1

The first game of the Women’s league started off our season with a very exciting ending. Eye Q 2017, playing in their very first game together, faced off against the veteran Eye Candy 2016. Eye Candy had a good lead early in the first half as Eye Q started to creep back slowly before ending the first half only down a few points. In the second half, Eye Q looked like a whole new team and took a late eight point lead with about two minutes left. Eye Candy refused to go away, as they hit two late back to back three pointers to bring their deficit to only down 2 points. With only 31 seconds left on the clock there were a few turnovers on both ends of the court, giving Eye Candy one last chance before time expired.

With time winding down, a shot was sent in the air right as the buzzer sounded. It hit the rim but, unfortunately, did not go in to give Eye Q their first ever win together. The returning champions, Eye Ballers 2016, left right where they left off last season as they were able to easily cruise on past Vitreous Secret 2017 in a 23-4 victory.

C. F. Eyecare 2017 started off the game strong, battling it out with Zookeepers 2016. Each minute of the first half was super intense, as the score was neck and neck and a few players were getting into it physically both offensively and defensively. Before the end of the half, Zookeepers’ Matthew Skoner chucked up a three pointer at half court, draining the shot right at the buzzer to give his team a 7 point lead. Zookeepers kept their foot on the gas pedal, as they extended their lead in the second half, giving them their first victory of the season.

My Heart Will Go On 2015 did not hold back in their 104-26 victory, as they broke 2014’s previous record of scoring more than 102 points in a game. The game of the night was truly a battle to the very end, as Ball Handlers (PA ’14 and ’15) faced off against Eye Ballin’ 2014. The PA team - playing without their center - kept the game close all the way to the very end of the game; however, late in the game, Eye Ballin’ was able to cinch the game at the free throw line to give them their first win of the season.

At the end of the evening, it was a big night for the Class of 2016 OD, as both class years were able to pick up a victory.

Week 2

The Athletic Committee would like to wish Steven Kotsokalis (Zookeepers 2016) a speedy recovery as he was sent to the hospital after landing awkwardly on his right leg on the very last play of the game.

The second year OD class was able to come out strong in their games this week, as both teams held the first year class to only 8 points each. Eye Candy 2016, sporting their brand new shirts, picked up their first victory after last week’s tough loss. Eye Ballers now holds the #1 spot and continue their mission to repeat as champions.

The game of the night truly was a nail bitter! My Heart Will Go On 2015 faced off against Monstars 2016 without one of their (My Heart Will Go On) star players - Brett Igbinoba. In a very intense battle, both teams continued to go back and forth on the score board and by the end of the half they both were knotted up at 27 points apiece. Throughout both halves the score was tied about nine times with six lead changes. In the end, Monstars was able to prevail - winning the game by three points to go 2-0 on the season.

The battle against Eye Ballin’ 2014 and C.F. Eyecare 2017 was another game to watch. Eye Ballin had control throughout most of the game as C.F. Eyecare continued to keep the game within reach. In the second half, thanks to sharp shooters David Weaver and Matthew Delong (C.F. Eyecare), who each scored 16 points and helped their team tie the game at 42-42. Eye Ballin finally buckled down in the last four minutes of the game as they went on a late 18-4 run to clinch their second victory of the season.

Once again, both 2016 OD classes picked up a victory this week as Zookeepers 2016 played against Ball Handlers PA ’14 &’15. Similar to Eye Ballin’, the Zookeepers had a slight control throughout the game in an intense battle with the PA team. Ball Handlers, playing once again without their center, fought to the very end to keep the game close. In the last minute of the game, the Ball Handlers were down by 3 points and had to foul a player on Zookeepers, hoping they would miss the 1-1 free throw. Ball Handlers got their wish as the player missed the free throw and had one last chance to tie the game up - with 17 seconds left on the clock. With the time winding down, a player on Ball Handlers spotted up for a deep three with a very questionable no call, which would have sent him to the line shooting three, as three players on Zookeepers defended the shot and ended up winning the game by 3 points.

20/20 Crossover 2017 were able to pick up their first victory of the season thanks to their captain, who was able to pick up a triple-double.

Week 3

What a rivalry week the ladies had where the games were very exciting as three of the four teams have evened up their record to 2-1! “Vitreous Secret” 2017 came out playing their best game of the season so far, but unfortunately was not enough this week as “Eye Q” 2017 were able to go over the .500 mark. The rematch of last year’s championship game between “Eye Ballers” 2016 and “Eye Candy 2016” was probably one of the most electrifying games we will see this season. The game was so intense defensively that the first basket was not scored until the first five minutes into the game! With tremendous defense on both ends of the court, by the end of the half the score was all knotted up at 6 a piece. The game continued to get even more intense in the 2nd half as the score was only 8-8 with 1 minute left on the clock. At the very end of the game the “Eye Ballers” had the ball, but was then stolen with just 5 seconds left, and what seemed to be an easy pass for a fast break to score the layup was miss timed and went out of bounds to send the game into overtime! The ladies liked overtime so much that they even went into a second overtime! By the second overtime, “Eye Candy” decided to put the game away as Samantha Price (Eye Candy) drove hard to the basket and got an And-1 sinking the free throw to bring their lead to 3 points. When it was all said and done, “Eye Candy” was able to finally get their revenge on their fellow classmates, as “Eye Ballers” have suffered their 1st loss ever as a team in two years!

And then there were only two! Only two teams remain undefeated: “Eye Ballin’ 2014 and “Zookeepers” 2016. Both “C.F. Eyecare” 2017 and “Ball Handlers” PA ‘14&’15 came out firing this week as they each picked up their 1st victory of the season. “C.F. Eyecare” played with a limited bench against “Monstars” 2016 who did not have their captain play in the game due to hurting his leg and coached his team from the sideline. It would have been an interesting game to witness if both teams had their full rosters, but “C.F. Eyecare” finally prevailed and picked up the W. The PA team, “Ball Handlers” PA ‘14&’15 followed in “C.F. Eyecare’s” footsteps as they played in a hard fought battle against “20/20 Crossover” 2017. The “Ball Handlers” were able to finally play with their center, Kevin Speechly (PA’14) who picked up a double-double in his debut to help lead his team to victory.

Week 4

“Eye Ballers” 2016 got back to their winning ways after last week’s tough loss, which was their 1st ever.

The rematch between “Eye Candy 2016” and “Eye Q” 2017 was just as intense the last time they met each other. “Eye Candy” was looking to win back to back huge games as they had the lead going into the 2nd half up 7-4. “Eye Q” looking for revenge kept the intensity high tying up the score at 11-11. With about 2 minutes left in the game “Eye Candy” was down by 2 points and were unable to sink a basket as “Eye Q” were able to beat them by exactly how much they lost to them the last time they faced off.

The 1st year OD class finally got to experience rivalry week as both “20/20 Crossover 2017” and “C.F. Eyecare 2017” went heads up. “20/20 Crossover” had control throughout the entire 1st half. With 15 minutes left in the 2nd half, “C.F. Eyecare” were able to come back and tie the game at 29-29. As soon as they were finally able to take the lead they never looked back and picked up the victory as they evened up their record to the .500 mark.

Both “Eye Ballin’ 2014 and “Zookeepers” 2016 have continued their winning streak to 4 games in row as both teams won their games by double digits. “Ball Handlers” PA ‘14&’15 were able to even up their record as well to 2-2 on the season.

1 player holds three columns on the leader board: Matthew Skoner (Zookeepers 2016)

Week 5

“Vitreous Secret” 2017 played the game of their lives last night against their classmates as they came out fighting by opening up the game with a three pointer taking an early 3-0 lead. They then even extended the lead to 5-1 as things have finally seemed to click for this team. “Eye Q” 2017 finally regrouped and settled down where by halftime the score was 7-7. When it was all said and done “Eye Q” came out victorious as “Vitreous Secret” will be looking to make a little more noise in the playoffs!

The exciting battle between “Eye Candy 2016” and “Eye Ballers” 2016 continuously leaves people at the edge of their seat. “Eye Candy” playing with a depleted bench due to injuries and “Eye Ballers” looking for revenge from last times encounter kept the game close until the very end. Each team continued to go back and forth where “Eye Candy” had a 9-7 lead at half. In the 2nd half each team continued to trade baskets where “Eye Ballers” were able to hold on to their 23-21 lead and pick up the victory and head into the playoffs with the #1 seed.

And then there was only 1! In one of the most intense and highly anticipated games of the season thus far the game between “Eye Ballin’ 2014 and “Zookeepers” 2016 was a game you did not want to miss. “Eye Ballin” found themselves down at half for the first time this season as “Zookeepers” had an 8 point lead playing without their center and leader board holder Matthew Skoner. “Zookeepers” extended their lead to 11 points with 12 minutes left in the 2nd half where the game seemed to be slipping out of the hands of “Eye Ballin”. “Eye Ballin” was able to go on a big run and finally tied the game up at 41-41. They then went on to take a 10 point lead and finished the game sealing the victory 63-56.

The second game of the night brought us the battle against “Ball Handlers” PA ’14 &15 and “C.F. Eyecare” 2017. “C.F. Eyecare” had control throughout the entire 1st half. With 10:32 left on the clock in the 2nd half the captain on “C.F. Eyecare” ended up fouling out with just a 3 point lead. “Ball Handlers” continued to battle to keep the game close as they found themselves down by 8 points with 2 minutes left. Incredibly, they slowly started to creep back as their center Kevin Speechly hits a 3 to bring their deficit to only 2 points! This game was going to come down to who will win it at the free throw line as “Ball Handlers” started fouling them right away to send them to the line for a 1 and 1 to have a chance to tie this game up. To their fortune, a player on “C.F. Eyecare” accidently stood in the wrong place while shooting free throws and gave the ball right back to “Ball Handlers”. Down by 2 and with 40 seconds left, David Weaver came out with a key steal and got a lay-up on a fast break as “C.F. Eyecare” almost gave away a win, but have now won 4 straight games.

Welcome back Brett Igbinoba (My Heart Will Go On) as he returns to play in his second game after being injured from playing in the very 1st week of the season. With the return of Brett, “My Heart Will Go On” 2015 have revived and can be a force again as they picked up their 2nd victory of the season.
