PLAYOFFS

Championship Game, April 27, 2012:

Intramural volleyball has finally come to an end as we have crowned our champions! With an intense match-up occurring tonight it was up in the air on who would come out victorious.

After losing to Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) in the regular season, Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) had something to prove. In the first set Practice Safe Sets came out firing. With Speyeked’s season hanging in the balance, they kept the second set close, as the score kept going back and forth.

Practice Safe Sets continued to be relentless however, and pulled away with the victory -  winning the match in two sets and becoming this year’s 2012 Intramural Volleyball Champions!!!

Speyeked will be the team to beat next year, as they will be bringing back their entire team as second years! As for Jared Scheff, which team will pick up this free agent?!

Thanks everyone for tuning in weekly and be on the lookout for Intramurals happening in the summer!

PLAYOFFS

April 23 | Week: 12

Three intense matches happened last night (April 26) in a fight to the championship game. The game of the night between the two PA teams was another grudge match, where The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) took the match in three sets the last time they faced off against the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13). With another epic battle amongst us they both split a match once again heading to the final set. The Ace Inhibitors were able to pull through yet again to advance for a chance to head to the championship game.

In the semi-finals it was the classic #2 Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) vs. #3 Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) battle, as another showdown was about to go down. The expected three set match occurred as they both split a set each. Coming down to the wire, Speyeked battled back from losing the first set to clinch the match and head to the championship game. The #1 seed Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) vs. #4 The Ace Inhibitors also was quite the intense match up. In all three sets each point went back and forth constantly until one team finally broke through. Practice Safe Sets fearful of the upset, regrouped in the last set to pull away and head to the championship game.

Tomorrow night (Friday, April 27) will bring us back the rematch from the SOSH Tournament for the Intramural Volleyball Title! Come and witness the last game of the season at 5:15PM!!!

First Round Playoffs:
Already in the first round of the playoffs there were some upsets in the forecast where two lower seeded teams survived to play another day! One was due to a forfeit and the other was a competitive match-up.

Losing the first set to the #7 Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team (Captain: Timothy Whitmire OD’14), the #10 seed The Retnetters (Captain: Jason Cheung OD’15), did not want their season to end just yet. Picking up the slack from their loss in the first set they stood their ground as they came back to win the next two sets to move on to the next round. Can The Retnetters keep this momentum going and shock the Intramural League as they face off against the #2 seed Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) in the next round?

Eye’d Hit It (Captain: Tyler Doersam OD’14) the #6 seed will be battling it out against Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) the #3 seed. Will it be the classic #2 vs #3 battle or will an upset occur again when we head into the semi-finals later in the evening?

The game of the night brings us the well awaited rematch between these two teams in the PA program. Last time them met The Ace Inhibitors clawed their way back to a victory. Who will have the last laugh as The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) and Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) face off against each other?

After tonight only two teams will remain standing to play for it all in the championship game as both the quarter and semi-finals will be played on the same day. Come and Witness the Bump and Grind starting at 5:00PM!

April 9th | Week 11:

As the regular season finally comes to an end we have had many great games played. Only one game last night went to a third set as the Superior Obliques (Captain: Eugene Wong OD’14) tried to steal one away from Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15). Superior Obliques warming up for the playoffs tomorrow took them down in the second set, but it was not enough to come away with the win as Speyeked responded strongly in the last set. The game of the night between Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) and Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) can be a potential championship game as the caliber of these two teams are quite exceptional. Both competing for the #1 playoff seed, Practice Safe Sets took the game in two sets sealing the #1 playoff spot. The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) continue to claw their way back into games as they battled it out in the second set against Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’15). Down by 5 and against match point they fought back to win the set 26-24! They used this energy in their second game against So Good It Hertz (Captain: Brittany Viniarski AUD’15) to win two consecutive games once again in only one night. Stay tuned for the playoffs!

March 26 | Week 10:

After The Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) suffered tough losses last week they have redeemed themselves as they went heads up against Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) last night. As the game of the night, one could cut the tension in the air with a knife as we witnessed an intense battle take place. Eye Candy who have remained perfect until now experienced their first loss of the season. In the first set the Beta Blockers started off the game strong. After what happened to them last week they wanted to clinch the match right away and not have to head to a third set. However, Eye Candy would not go away as they kept fighting back. With the match tied 24-24, each team kept going back and forth until finally Eye Candy won the set on the 29th point! Even though the momentum was now in Eye Candy’s favor, unfortunately for them, this week belonged to the Beta Blockers as they took the match in the third set. The Superior Obliques (Captain: Eugene Wong) fought back in the last two sets to pick up the victory and Notorious D.I.G (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’15) picked up their first victory of the season!

March 19 | Week 9:

There was a lot of action happening last night as three games went to a third set. Now that both of the PA teams have returned from break they were ready to get back into the mix of things. The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) were relentless as they never gave up when they were down. In their 1st game of the evening against the Superior Obliques (Captain: Eugene Wong OD’14) they took the first set quite easily. The Superior Obliques fought back in a battle to win the second set by two. However, The Ace Inhibitors took the third set to win their first game of the night. After the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) suffered a tough loss to Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) they were eager to pick up a win against their fellow classmates. Since both PA teams were playing a double header, each team was tired from their games beforehand. The Beta Blockers started off strong in the first set against The Ace Inhibitors as they jumped to an early (14-1) lead to inevitably win the set. It looked like the Beta Blockers were going to win the match in two sets as they were up 24-18 in the second set. However, the Ace Inhibitors scored 6 straight points and eventually took the set to go to sudden death. The Ace Inhibitors never gave up as they came out on top winning both matches of the night and evened up their records with the Beta Blockers to (6-3)! Another team that only had one loss on the season lost last night as well. Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) were mesmerized by their opponents beauty as the Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team (Captain: Timothy Whitmire OD’14), sporting their bandanas, swept them in two sets giving them their second loss of the season as they improved their record to over the .500 mark.

March 12 | Week 8:

Last night only three games were played as two teams had to forfeit. Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) started the night off by getting back to their winning ways as they faced against Eye’d Hit It (Captain: Tyler Doersam OD’14). Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’ 15) did all they could to pick up their first victory of the season, but came up short in the third set. So Good it Hertz (Captain: Brittany Viniarski AUD’15) kept their match interesting as they battled continuously point after point. On one of the volley’s the ball went over the net back and forth about 20 times before one of the teams scored a single point. However, Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) took the match in two sets to go 7-1 on the season, but it was a fun and intense game to watch.

February 27, 2012 | Week 7:

And then there was only one! Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) is the only team left standing without suffering a loss as they have won 7 straight!

After last night’s game of the night between Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) and Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14), one could feel a playoff atmosphere. It was the only game that went to a third set as it went back and forth.

Practice Safe Sets has not let any team score more than 20 points on them in a single set, let alone go to a final third set. As both teams each won a set, they were down to the last set. Speyeked jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as they gave Practice Safe Sets their first loss of the season.

The Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) picked up the victory last night - they have now won five straight! They now are also tied with Practice Safe Sets and Speyeked, as each team shares a (6-1) record.

The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) did what they needed to do as they evened up their records against their opponents to go above the .500 mark.

February 20, 2012 | Week 6:

After the midway point both Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) and Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) have continued their winning ways, as they each have won 6 straight!

Only one game last night went to a deciding third set and that was the game of the night. Both The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) and the Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team (Captain: Erik Ebbing OD’14) were each battling it out to reach the .500 mark. In the first set, the score went back and forth. As The Ace Inhibitors took down the first set, the Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team kept on pace, competing in the second set as they went to a 26 point match to bring it to the deciding third match. In the end, The Ace Inhibitors did as their name implies; they inhibited the Really Ridiculous Good Looking team from reaching the .500 mark.

So Good It Hertz (Captain: Brittany Viniarski AUD’15) was on a mission to even up their records against their opponents. However, the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) had only one thing in mind and they are now on a four game winning streak.

Game 1: 25-5
Game 2: 25-11

February 13, 2012 | Week 5:

After last night’s extremely close game of the night, two undefeated teams still remain!

Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14) and Eye’d Hit It (Captain: Tyler Doersam OD’14) were neck and neck until the very end. With the return of Eye’d Hit It’s captain, they were looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week.

In the first set there were seven ties and many lead changes, as Eye’d Hit It took the first set. Eye Candy had not lost a set until then and had to quickly regroup before they surrendered their first loss of the season. And regroup they did - winning the second set by 8 and then taking the third set to keep their undefeated streak alive!

Both So Good It Hertz (Captain: Brittany Viniarski AUD’15) and The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) were fighting to start off next week with a winning record, but only one was able to do so.

Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’15) looking for their first win of the season, took down the first set. So Good It Hertz - sporting their brand new uniforms - would not go down without a fight, preventing Notorious D.I.G. from picking up their first win as they advance next week over the .500 mark.

Unfortunately, for The Ace Inhibitors that was not the case. The phenom first year OD team Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) had a wakeup call as they lost the first set, which went to 26 points after being tied six times throughout the set. Just like Eye Candy did in their game, Speyeked regrouped and never looked back as they continue their win streak to go (4-1) after their tough loss to Eye Candy two weeks ago.

February 6, 2012 | Week 4:

And then there were only 2! Only two teams have remained perfect after a month of intramurals: Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena OD’14) and Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman OD’14). The competition has really picked up as this week we had three games go into the third set! Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) are still showing that they are potential contenders as they took down an undefeated team last night. Eye’d Hit It without their captain (Tyler Doersam OD’14) regrouped after losing the 1st set by coming back strong in the 2nd set to even up the match. In the 3rd set Beta Blockers jumped to an early 10-3 lead and never looked back as they gave Eye’d Hit It their 1st loss of the season. Both The Ace Inhibitors (Captain: Kim Moran PA’13) and The Retnetters (Captain: Jason Cheung OD’15) were fighting to reach the .500 mark before the end of the month as they each went to a 3rd set. As each set went back and forth it all came down to the last set. The Retnetters jumped out early, however The Ace Inhibitors had other ideas as they kept being relentless and stole the game to go (2-2) for the season. The Superior Obliques (Captain: Eugene Wong OD’14) and Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’15) were fighting for their 1st win of the season. Again each set was real close, but in the end as their name implies The Obliques came out superior this week. Stay tuned next week!

January 30, 2012 | Week 3:

For the third straight week in a row only 1 of the 6 games played went to a deciding game 3. The Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team (Captain: Timothy Whitmire 14’OD) gave the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich 13’PA) quite a scare. In the first set Beta Blockers squeaked out the game winning it by only 2. In the second set the Really Ridiculous Good Looking Team, sporting their bandanas, took it to their opponents tying up the match to one set a piece. With the game on the line Beta Blockers took a strong lead, but the opposition kept playing tough as they tied the game 13-13. However, Beta Blockers came away with the next two points to get back on their winning streak. Only 3 teams remain undefeated as Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski 15’OD) suffered their first loss after facing a relentless Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman 14’OD) team. As what seemed to be a definite three set match became a two set sweep. Eye Candy took down the first set 25-21. In the second set, team Speyeked started to run away with the score up 18-8. After a timeout from Eye Candy they regrouped and came back stronger than ever. As they kept creeping back they finally tied up the game 21-21. Speyeked finally called a timeout to get their team back on the same page, but Eye Candy was on a roll and took the set up to 28 points showing that experience does play somewhat of a factor! The Retnetters (Captain: Jason Cheung 15’OD) picked up their first victory last night and let’s see if they will start up a win streak of their own.

January 16, 2012 | Week 2:

For the second straight week in a row only 1 of the 6 games played went to a deciding game 3. The game of the night was everything we expected it would be. Speyeked (Captain: David Domachowski) started off the match strong by winning the 1st set. Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich) did not want to lose without a fight as they retaliated and took the second set. With the momentum on the Beta Blockers side team Speyeked was feeling a bit anxious. However, Speyeked regrouped and silenced the Beta Blockers in the 3rd set as they start the season (2-0). Up until now experience seems to be a factor as 3 of the 4 remaining undefeated teams are returners from last year’s season: Eye’d Hit It (Captain: Tyler Doersam), Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena) and Eye Candy (Captain: Alex Gibberman).

January 17 – 20 | Week 1

After the first week of action, it seems there will be a lot of strong competition to come! Out of the six games played, only one game went to a deciding game three.
The Audiology team “So Good It Hertz” (Captain: Brittany Viniarski ’15AUD) is one of the all- girl teams. They gave the "Really Ridiculous Good Looking" team (Captain: Timothy Whitmire ’14OD) an intense match. Each of the three matches were close, but in the end the Audiology team was too much to handle, and they came away with the victory.
As stated previously, both "Eye Candy" (Captain: Alex Gibberman ’14OD) and "Speyeked" (Captain: David Domachowski ’15OD) started off the season as we expected they would, as they each picked up their first victory. The "Beta Blockers" (Captain: Amanda Radovich ’13PA) seem like potential contenders starting off the season with a good start.

The Athletic team would like to wish Olivia Chu ’14OD a quick recovery, as she was injured going all out for her team in the very first game of the night.
