The last week of our regular season has come and passed, and we now have 7 of our 8 playoff teams decided. We still have one game to be played tomorrow (4/10) at 7:30pm between Kiss My Ace and So Good It Hertz. This game will decide the eighth and final spot insomuch as if Kiss My Ace wins, they lock up the final spot. However, if they lose, there will be a three way tie for eighth among Kiss My Ace, Eye Spike It, and Notorious D.I.G. Since Eye Spike It beat both of those teams in their head to head match-ups, they would get the spot in the event of the tie.
I will provide an update tomorrow after the game is played with the final standings. For now, I will provide the playoff schedule, with the eighth spot remaining undecided. Here is the schedule for this Thursday, April 11. These games will essentially be quarterfinals, and next week the semifinals and championship will be played on the same day (which I believe is supposed to be Friday, April 19, but that still needs to be confirmed).
Update:
Kiss My Ace won their game tonight (April 10) and they are now in the playoffs as a seventh seed. The schedule for tomorrow is different from the original, as we have to play both quarter and semifinals tomorrow due to scheduling conflicts next week.
So, if your team wins, you will be playing again later in the night. The date of the championship is still TBD and we will discuss it with the captains of both competing teams.
The schedule:
5:30pm SpEYEked vs 9 Shades of Grey
6:15pm SWAT Team vs Volleyballers
7:00pm Beta Blockers vs Kiss My Ace
7:45pm Sets on the Beach vs Aceholes
8:45pm Winners of 5:30pm game vs Winners of 7:45pm game
9:30pm Winners of 6:15pm game vs Winners of 7:00pm game
We had some big surprises during Week 8 of our season. To start off the night, a depleted Aceholes team (Captains: John Guadron, ’14OT and Kim Ovittore, ’16OD) put up a resilient fight against Sets on the Beach (Captain: Kelsey Sieg, ’16OD). With help from some guest substitutions, the Aceholes made it quite a match, losing in two games by only five combined points.
The game of the night was anything but that, as the SWAT Team (Captain: Matt Butler, ’14PA) dominated from the outset and led throughout both games. In our biggest upset of the year so far, Eye Spike It (Captains: Mary Gouris ’16OD and Jenna Sembrat, ’16OD) came out firing against a team that was tied for first, Beta Blockers (Captaon: Sarah Chlebowski, ’13PA). Eye Spike It was one of the first teams that could match up with the size of the Beta Blockers (with very big performances from Avi Motola, Joe Wadas, and Matt Wadas). While the games were close, Eye Spike It still managed to win without the need for a tie-breaker and showed that they are going to be a force come playoff time.
A few quick notes from last week: the game of the night really lived up to the expectations! With two of the top teams in the league battling it out to remain high up in the standings, Beta Blockers came away with the win over Sets on the Beach (Capt: Kelsey Sieg, '16OD) in a very close third game. And with another great effort, To Kill a Blocking Nerd (Capt: Brian Lillien,'16OD) fought for their second win of the season against 9 Shades of Grey (Capt: Julian Chang, '16OD) and came out on top.
This week we'll have the schedule returning to full strength, as we were missing two teams last week due to spring break for the PA students.
The sad ending of spring break for the optometry program brings us back into the swing of things, and that includes volleyball! Last time we played (Feb 28), we had some surprises as well as upsets.
In the first game of the night, Kiss My Ace (Capt: Sean Dempsey, OD'16) pulled off a huge upset against the Sets on the Beach (Capt: Kelsey Sieg, OD'16) by taking the first and third games.
Also putting up a fight was Eye Spike It (Capts: Mary Gouris, OD’16 and Jenna Sembrat, OD'16), playing against Aceholes (Capts: Kim Ovittore and Jon Guadron, OT'14). Even though they came away with a win in the first game, they couldn't pull off the upset, as Aceholes found their stride in the second and third games, with every one being close.
Volleyballers (Capt: Marta Molak, PA'16) brought their "A" game as they handily beat Notorious D.I.G. (Capt: Wenny Tan, OD'15) in the game of the night.
This past week featured some upsets on the court, as well as some very close matches. In the game of the night, we had Sets on the Beach (Cpt: Kelsey Sieg ’16OD) pitted against SWAT Team (Cpt: Matthew Butler ’14PA). To call it the “game of the night” would be understating just how great of a match-up it was. Playing in what was by far the most competitive game of the year, the two teams had to battle for every point they earned, with each point coming after long volleys, hard spikes, and gutsy returns. The first two games were decided by two and four points, and, in the tie-breaker, SWAT Team was able to close it out and win 15-9.
The final game of the night was also a nail-biter, and featured Beta Blockers (Cpt: Sarah Chlebowski ’13PA) against Eye Assist (Cpts: Whitney Crosby ’16OD and Helen Wang ’16OD). Once again, every game was close and Beta Blockers took it by only 3 points in the tie-breaker.
We are left with no more undefeated teams, and there are currently four teams at 4-1. This week those teams will see if one can claim the outright number one spot, and we have Too Much Sclera (Cpt: Kelsey Paciotti ’16OD) looking to pick up their first win.
We had a very exciting past week in intramural volleyball. As you may remember from the last email, the game of the night featured the last two undefeated teams battling head to head for outright first place. The first of three games was a close one, and in the end it was taken by Sets on the Beach (Captain: Kelsey Sieg, OD'16). In the second game, SpEYEked (Captain: Dave Domakowski, OD'15) came away with a big margin of victory.
In the tie-breaker, the game went back and forth until Sets on the Beach went on a mini-run to win 15-8. We also had To Kill a Blocking Nerd (Captain: Brian Lilien ’16OD) notch their first victory of the season in a hard-fought battle with Eye Assist (Captains: Helen Wang '16OD and Whitney Crosby '16OD). We are left with our last undefeated team and there are four teams that remain 1 game back at 3-1.
***PLEASE NOTE: There will be no games this Thursday (2/14) so that anyone who chooses to do so may celebrate Valentine's Day. I will send out an email early next week with the game schedule for 2/21. Look forward to seeing everyone then. And on behalf of the Athletic Committee, happy Valentine's Day to all!!!
This past week two teams were able to remain undefeated. SpEYEked (Captain: David Domachowski '15OD) and Sets on the Beach (Captain: Kelsey Sieg '16OD) both won close matches in their tie-breaking third games.
Seven teams are now above .500, but there is still plenty of season left. This Thursday, February 7, will leave only one undefeated team left, as the game of the night will feature our two previously mentioned teams battling it out at 8:30 PM.
Also, To Kill a Blocking Nerd (Captain: Brian Lilian ’16OD) and Too Much Sclera (Captain: Kelsey Paciotti '16OD) will be playing for their respective first wins. The action kicks off at 5:30 PM in the Hafter Student Community Center.
5:30pm Too Much Sclera (0-3) vs Notorious D.I.G. (2-1)
6:15pm Eye Spike It (1-2) vs SWAT Team (2-1)
7:00pm Volleyballers (2-1) vs Aceholes (1-2)
7:45pm Eye Assist (1-2) vs To Kill a Blocking Nerd (0-3)
8:30pm SpeEYEked (3-0) vs Sets on the Beach (3-0) **Game of the Night**
9:15pm Beta Blockers (2-1) vs Kiss My Ace (1-2)
10:00pm So Good It Hertz (2-1) vs 9 Shades of Grey (1-2)
The competition is really starting to heat up after just the second week, as only two teams: SpEYEked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) and Sets on the Beach (Captain: Kelsey Sieg OD’16). remain undefeated! Also, four of the seven games played last night went to a third set where a few games were even decided by winning the match by two points.
The game of the night brought us SpEYEked and the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13). In the first set, SpEYEked had a 6 point lead, but the Beta Blockers would not give up as they battled back to tie the game at 24 apiece. Unfortunately, for the Beta Blockers they were unable to finish this comeback and lost the second set to help SpEYEked go to 2-0 for the season.
Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tran OD’15) is playing like a whole new team this year and they are really bringing it to their competitors. In a hard fought battle against Sets on the Beach the match was a true nail bitter, as the deciding third set went to win by two. However, Sets on the Beach came out on top and also go to 2-0 for the season.
Another true nail bitter was the match between So Good It Hertz (Captain: Jamie Guinan ’15AUD) and Too Much Sclera (Captain: Kelsey Paciotti ’16OD). In the first set Too Much Sclera had a late lead, but So Good It Hertz had a great comeback to take the first set 26-24. In the second set, Too Much Sclera started the game off strong and were able to win the set and head to the deciding third set. In the last set the score continued to go point for point, as they were all knotted up 14-14. In the end, as their team name implies, So Good It Hertz was able to put a “hurting” on Too Much Sclera, giving them their second loss of the season. All of the Physician Assistant teams, both first and second years, are 1-1 on the season.
The Athletic Committee would like to wish Tom Ravas ’16OD of To Kill A Blocking Nerd a fast recovery, after his injury in last night’s game!

Updates by Sean Dempsey ’16OD, Co-Chair, Athletics Department
First I would like to introduce the new Athletic Committee for the year: Brett Igbinoba ’15OD, Sean Dempsey ’16OD and Kelsey Sieg ’16OD.
The co-ed intramural volleyball league is ready to start off its third year debut here at Salus! There was an explosion of teams, as 14 teams will take the court this season with five teams returning from last year! There will be a brand new champion this year as last year’s champions, Practice Safe Sets (Captain: Vittorio Mena ’14OD) are leaving due to their externships.
Jared Scheff, one of the players from Practice Safe Sets, is the only Class of 2014 member returning this year as he joins Kiss My Ace (Captain: Sean Dempsey ’16OD) to help bring the team to the championship game. The predicted heavy favorites to win it all this year will be two returning teams: SpEYEked (Captain: David Domachowski ’15OD) and the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich ’13PA).
But as we all know, anything can happen as we are expecting some good competition this year. Who will take it all this year?!
After the first week of action it seems there will be a lot of strong competition to come! As stated previously both the Beta Blockers (Captain: Amanda Radovich PA’13) and SpEYEked (Captain: David Domachowski OD’15) started off the season as we expected they would, as they each picked up their first victory. SpEYEked however, was up for a scare as Nine Shades of Gray (Captain: Julian Chang OD’15) came back in the 2nd set after losing the first set by 12 points. In the third set, Nine Shades of Gray once again came back to tie the match up 10-10, but SpEYEked went on a mini-run to seal their victory.
Two other games went to a deciding third set as both Notorious D.I.G. (Captain: Wenny Tan OD’15) and Eye Assist (Captain: Helen Wang OD’16) battled back in intense battles to come away with their first win of the season. Last night brought us the battle between both 1st year Physician Assistant teams: SWAT Team (Captain: Matthew Butler PA’14) and the Volleyballers (Captain: Marta Molak PA’14). As the classmates went head to head, SWAT Team ended up having just a bit more man power as they took the match in two sets.
Getting their season off to a good start are SWAT Team and Sets on the Beach (Captain: Kelsey Sieg OD’16), with both teams having the potential to win it all!
