Scholars/MPH Carly Grondin Wins Whitener Scholarship

Carly GrondinCarly Grondin ’17OD, ’17MPH is the 2015-2016 recipient of the John Whitener Family Scholarship. Ms. Grondin, who is from Windham, Maine, is in the Accelerated Scholars optometry program. In her essay, Ms. Grondin noted that “The rich clinical experience that I have obtained thus far during my time spent at The Eye Institute and other Salus satellite clinics has left me wondering how I might impact the practice of optometry in a broader way...the MPH program has been an optimal opportunity for me to reconcile my desire to serve the individual, while aiming to address the global needs of particularly vulnerable populations by obtaining an adjunctive education in Public Health [to complement my clinical optometric experience]."

The $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding optometry student or optometrist who is completing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at Salus. It was established by Dr. John Whitener, a former Salus PCO adjunct faculty member and a member of the advisory board that helped to create the MPH program at Salus, in honor of his parents and brother.

Dr. Whitener worked in the Washington, DC office of the American Optometric Association (AOA) for many years, interacting with government agencies and optometric organizations on behalf of the profession. In addition to his service with the AOA, Dr. Whitener has also been actively involved in the American Public Health Association (APHA). Dr. Whitener was inducted as a Distinguished Practitioner by the National Academies of Practice in 2011.
