Three faculty members from the University’s College of Education and Rehabilitation (CER) made a presentation about interprofessional education at the Virginia Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) last week.
Blindness and Low Vision Studies (BLVS) department chair and program director, Dr. Fabiana Perla, Ms. Jamie Maffit, MS, COMS, CLVT, coordinator of the Orientation and Mobility (O&M) program, and Ms. Dawn Ciccarone, MS, OTR/L, CLVT, clinical instructor, occupational therapy program, presented "Collaboration between vision professionals and OTs: When, Why and How."
The presentation included contributions by Dr. Lauren Sponseller, director of the Occupational Therapy master’s program, and Ms. Lachelle Smith, MS, director of the Vision Rehabilitation Therapy program, who were unable to attend.
Highlighting the interprofessional collaborations taking place between the College’s Departments of Blindness and Low Vision Studies and Occupational Therapy, the presentation was well received by the audience. As a result, the presenters were invited to repeat the presentation at the International AER conference in Florida in July.
Additionally, Dr. Perla and Ms. Maffit also presented "Student Portfolios: what they are and their potential for O&M" at the Southeast Orientation and Mobility Conference in Chattanooga, TN.
