Brittany Huckin ‘17SLP presented her capstone project at a community service event for the Parent Advisory Network at the TM Pierce School in Philadelphia earlier this month. The focus of the presentation was how to create a literacy- and language-rich environment at home.
Assistant professor Kyomi Gregory, PhD, CCC-SLP (who co-mentored the project with clinical instructor Patricia Mayro, MA, CCC-SLP), called the experience “phenomenal.” She noted that the parents who participated were incredibly receptive and interested in sharing with their children the new ideas they learned. Salus participants have been invited back to share at more schools. They are also looking forward to future presentations and building an in-depth relationship with the Parent Advisory Network.
Huckin’s capstone project included various stations to teach parents different ways to engage with their children. Many of the items used for the projects (boxes, recyclables, etc.) were generously donated by the Salus community.
