With the start of the 2017 semester, another Salus University faculty member has satisfied all of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedicine. Bre Myers AuD ‘06 is the first faculty member from the Osborne College of Audiology to complete the degree, defending her dissertation, “Acoustic Stimulus Effects on Functional Balance Measures,” in November to currently enrolled PhD students as well as faculty and committee members Victor Bray, PhD, Martin Pienkowski, PhD, and external reviewer Devin McCaslin, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic. She will receive her degree at commencement on May 25.
Dr. Myers is a graduate of Salus University’s Osborne College of Audiology, in which she obtained her doctorate in 2007. After working in private practice upon the completion of her degree, Dr. Myers decided to branch into the world of academia.
“I couldn’t say no (to the opportunity),” she said, “I really wanted to challenge myself to do and to think critically. I really like being in the academic setting, interactions with students, and wanted to learn how to be a better professor but a better audiologist and wanted to make positive changes in the field.”
She currently serves as a lecturer, lab instructor, and clinical preceptor in the University’s Audiology program. Dr. Myers is very passionate about clinic and patient-centered research as well as furthering the collaboration of audiology to be more integrated with other health professions.
“I am very much interested in looking at interdisciplinary opportunities that are available here, in audiology and between disciplines like optometry and occupational therapy,” she said.
It is without a doubt that Dr. Myers will use her degree to further impact the students and faculty at Salus University, as well as the members of the community that she serves clinically. In his announcement to the faculty and students about her satisfaction of the requirements for Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedicine, current dean of research and director of the Graduate Programs in Biomedicine Mitchell Scheiman, OD, PhD ‘16, stated, “this is an importance milestone in her academic career and we look forward to many productive years from Bre as an educator and researcher at Salus University.”
Congratulations to Dr. Myers—we look forward to the continuing positive impact you will have at Salus University.
