The Hanen Centre, a Canadian-based charitable organization, aims to “provide parents, caregivers, early childhood educators and speech-language pathologists with the knowledge and training they need to help young children develop the best possible language, social and literacy skills.”
“It Takes Two to Talk® – The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Language Delay” - held last summer in conjunction with the University’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program – was a three-day workshop developed to provide Speech-Language Pathologists with the strategies and coaching framework to empower parents to become an effective language facilitator for their child.
“We believe that this is a great evidence-based professional development opportunity for our staff and professionals in the area,” Robert Serianni, MS, CCC-SLP, director of the Speech-Language Institute of Salus University. The hands-on program focused on the role parents play in their child’s early language intervention and how speech-language pathologists facilitate parents’ involvement.
In coordination with the success of the CE event, The Hanen Centre and the SLP department are bringing a free, research based program that increases language skills for children zero to five years of age with speech and language delays to campus. Parents and caregivers will learn how to improve communication skills at home and in daily life activities.
