100 Stories: Leslie O’Dell, OD ‘03

Leslie O’DellWhy did you chose your particular profession?

Exposure to eye care for most of my life as a myope since age seven.

Tell me about your time at Salus/PCO. Why did you choose to study here?

It is a great program that focused heavily on ocular disease, in a great area of the country - I mean who doesn't love an authentic Philly Cheesesteak!

What are some of your favorite memories from Salus/PCO – favorite classes, professors, classmates, clinical experiences, co-workers?

I had a great module; we shared challenging cases but also had a lot of fun. Some of my favorite people were classmates whom I still see at the national meetings - Carey and Gene Shifin, Michele (Pawloski) Maiers, Jess (Potter) and Chris Udina, Mike Higgins, Nicole (Lemoncelli) Doherty, Stacy (Jesse) Conway to name a few.

Tell me about your life after Salus/PCO – where do/did you practice, how long?

I started at the Baltimore VA doing a residency then worked in an OD/MD practice for the next 11 years. About four years ago I joined a group OD practice in Pennsylvania (all PCO/Salus grads) and have a focus on ocular disease and dry eye management. I have done a lot of research in dry eye disease and was part of the TFOS DEWS II initiative and was named one of six U.S. TFOS ambassadors. Most recently I was asked to be co-chief medical editor for Modern Optometry - a journal focused on helping OD's continue to practice full scope Optometry and grow their medical focus.
