Throwback Thursday: Our New Freshmen

  • In the series titled, “Our New Freshman”, the Alumni Bulletin for the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (PSCO), later renamed the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), discusses in detail the new incoming class of optometry students. Dated October 1958, this featured shed light on PSCO’s forty-fourth entering class as the opening of the school term marked the beginning of the College’s fortieth year.our-new-freshman-pic1
  • The Alumni Bulletin stated the following about the Class of 1962:
  • One woman and 29 men answered roll call at the opening session.

  • The members of the class came from Cuba, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

  • Ten, or exactly one-third, students of the class hold a Bachelor’s Degree, whit the average student having credit for a little more than three years of college work.

  • The average age on entrance, twenty-two and one third years

  • Six are married

  • In honor of Orientation week, here are some similar statistics for our incoming first-year students:
  • There are over 250 women and 60 men.

  • Students come from over 25 states (and internationally) – the most popular locations being Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

  • Over 300 of the total students have a Bachelor’s Degree and eight have a Master’s Degree.

  • The average age is around 23 years

  • 10 students are married
