President’s Medal Recipients
Many people have been part of the proud history of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus University. Alumni, faculty, and friends of the College helped establish PCO as a pioneer and leader in the field of optometric education and the profession of optometry. The following people - highlighted on Medal Mondays - were honored on May 20, 1995 at the 75th Anniversary Gala Celebration for their outstanding contributions to the College and the field of optometry and vision care.
During the weekend of the Centennial Gala Celebration, additional alumni, faculty, and friends were honored.
The Hon. Nochem S. Winnet, LLB (Harvard Law School, ’23), LLD Hon. ’76, (1898-1989)
In his book, Vignettes of a Lucky Life, “Noke” described his early association with Pennsylvania College of Optometry’s (PCO) founder and president Dr. Albert Fitch while serving as College counsel. Through his lifetime of activity and involvement in civic, legal, philanthropic, health and welfare organizations and educational institutions, he touched the lives of many Philadelphians. In 1940, he served as assistant director of Public Safety of Philadelphia. He was elected judge of the Municipal Court from 1940 to 1950. Judge Winnet joined the College Board of Trustees in 1962 and served until his retirement in 1972. He continued to play an active role in board affairs as an Emeritus Trustee and College counsel until his death in 1989. Judge Winnet received PCO’s Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1964.
