Dr. Bisant Labib is the co-chief of Primary Care, Suite at The Eye Institute. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and completed a Primary Care residency at The Eye Institute (TEI). She is also an assistant professor at PCO. Below is a Q and A with Dr. Labib.
Why did you choose Optometry?
I chose optometry because vision is such an important sense, and that through the eyes you can see so much else of what is going on inside the rest of the body. I also enjoyed the aspect of interacting with patients and being able to interact with them and provide a service to others.
Tell me about your time at PCO and why you chose PCO
I was first a PCO student, then resident, then faculty member, so I guess you can say that I have enjoyed my time here! I chose PCO for graduate school because of its emphasis on clinical education and propensity to see so much ocular disease. It also has a longstanding reputation for optometry (100 years!) My residency there allowed for me to treat and manage complex cases and have an opportunity to explore all subspecialties with our incredible in-house specialists. I stayed on as a faculty member because I enjoyed the academic, constant learning environment and working with students.
What are your favorite memories?
My residency at PCO was unforgettable. It was filled with long hours of lectures, patient care, conferences, etc. But I got to do it all with my co-residents who became close friends and amazing, supportive faculty.
Do you have a particular patient that stands out for you?
I will always remember the first patient I treated fully on my own as a resident and the rewarding feeling of fixing a health concern or problem for a patient. That feeling never gets old!
