Salus Scoop Returns to In-Person and Draws a Big Crowd

Sometimes, the party planner doesn't get to enjoy the party. That was the case for Megan Kirkpatrick ‘24AUD, student council president and chair of the Campus Activities Committee (CAC) when it came to the recent Salus Scoop.

The event, held to give first-year students an opportunity to learn more about the University’s clubs and organizations and how they can become more involved, was curtailed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, there were no in-person campus activities for more than a year, which virtually eliminated the existence of the CAC. But, now they are making up for it.

Salus Scoop crowd photoSalus Scoop returned Sept. 2 this year, and the planning for it kept Kirkpatrick and the re-formed CAC hopping in the lead-up to the event itself.

“Going into planning this I was kind of in the dark, because being a second-year student, I didn’t get this last year. I really didn’t know what it was all about,” said Kirkpatrick. “So, I met with Monae Kelsey, who is the advisor for student council, and she was super-helpful in leading me in the right direction — getting me the contacts I needed for vendors. We also had a band and dessert truck, to make it more fun and interactive.”

The Engagement Committee of the CAC had done the Zoom planning for some virtual events held during the pandemic, so the planning of the Salus Scoop, which started in June, fell to student council while the CAC was being rebuilt. Salus Scoop would be the first face-to-face event planned by the CAC since the pandemic started.

And, by all accounts, the event was a success. Kirkpatrick said 286 students attended and had the opportunity to learn more at 21 different tables of clubs and organizations.

“I think the students enjoyed having a feel of normalcy being back to campus, to do something school-related with their new cohort,” said Kirkpatrick. “That made it special. To finally see what we told them about at orientation come to life was really cool — that things are happening again and things are going to continue to happen.”

According to Kirkpatrick, several students at Salus Scoop expressed interest in being more involved with the CAC and she encourages that participation. Students who enjoy planning events or who have planned events in the past and want to join the CAC can send an email to CAC@Salus.edu for details.

The CAC continues to remain busy. Next up is the annual Salus Soiree, this year scheduled for Friday, Nov. 12, on the Spirit of Philadelphia. Students will board from 7:30 to 8 p.m. and cruise from 8 to 11 p.m.
