One of the hallmarks of a Salus education is the direct impact students, faculty and staff have on the community-at-large. Close to home and across the globe – from Appalachia to Africa – the programs at Salus pursue humanitarian trips and community outreach initiatives that advance the world of health, wellness and public service.
During The College Tour segment: Building Community, Ashka Patel ‘23OD, described her experience providing care to patients in the University’s clinical facilities first and foremost and then at local elementary schools and abroad to places like Panama treating underserved populations. But the highlight for her was definitely filming on location at The Eye Institute (TEI) and experiencing the entire filming process, especially the behind the scenes nuances.
“I'm so forever grateful for being able to be on the show. It's unlike anything else I've ever experienced in my life. Funny enough, I think my favorite part of all of it was the actual recording part,” she said. “Just to be in that scene, see how that works and just kind of working back and forth, putting all the pieces together was actually really interesting. You understand that when you watch a show or you watch TV, these things don't just happen in one go (take), everything has to be put together. And, it was actually really cool to go through that process.”
She added that one of the best aspects of the development of this series was the fact that the students and faculty involved wrote their own scripts from their own perspectives. “Everyone that we worked with was so kind, so helpful, and supportive, and they understood that we're students and we have things to do,” Patel said. “But at the end of the day, they still were able to come through and help show us our stories. And, so I think that was really awesome.”
