Post-Baccalaureate Programs Give Students a Leg Up on the Future

Salus University’s Post-baccalaureate programs are for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree or are working toward a secondary degree from an accredited institution. The Post-baccalaureate in Health Sciences has two tracks. One is designed for those specifically interested in a health professions career (Health Sciences) and the other for students interested in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).

Two students laughing“Many students from our previous cohorts are currently enrolled in professional programs such as optometry, audiology, occupational therapy, medical, orthotics and prosthetics, physician assistant and nursing both here at Salus as well as at other schools across the United States,” said Darryl Horn, PhD, FAAO, director of the Post-baccalaureate program in Health Sciences and assistant director of the PhD program in Biomedicine. ”A few have even recently graduated from their profession programs and are now working in their new careers.”

The competitive 30-week Post-baccalaureate Program in Health Sciences offers students interested in pursuing a graduate or professional degree in the health sciences an opportunity to strengthen their scientific background or use it as a record enhancer, boost their CV, or earn prerequisite course credits. The biggest advantage to completing the program is that it makes the student a competitive applicant for any health professions program to which they apply.

Students in the certificate program will receive an introduction to patient care and have the opportunity to observe within the University’s clinical facilities — The Eye Institute (TEI), the Pennsylvania Ear Institute (PEI), the Speech-Language Institute (SLI) and the Occupational Therapy Institute (OTI) — along with career guidance to assist them in achieving their ultimate professional goals. Eligible students accepted into the Post-baccalaureate program who successfully complete the certificate, submit a complete application, and meet the program prerequisite requirements will be guaranteed an interview to a Salus program of their choice — Optometry, Audiology, Physician Assistant Studies, Speech-Language Pathology, Blindness and Low Vision, Orthotics and Prosthetics and Biomedicine.

Post-baccalaureate students must complete 25 credits while maintaining good academic standing in order to successfully complete the certificate program.

SLP student giving instructionThe Speech-Language Pathology track, designed to prepare students to excel academically and professionally by providing a rigorous, holistic and comprehensive experience that will establish a foundation necessary for their success in the Speech-Language Pathology profession.  This program will assist students who need to complete content-specific coursework, to improve their GPA, or to improve their study skills for academic success in a master’s program. Finishing this track will allow completion of the prerequisites to taking the certification exam to become an SLP assistant (SLPA) if a student wishes.

Aspects that set the SLP track apart include:

  • Observation hours in a variety of settings. Observation hours are scheduled according to course content and professional interests.

  • On-campus clinical experience. All students can earn clinical hours at the University’s Speech-Language Institute on the Elkins Park, Pennsylvania campus. In addition, off-campus experiences are available for those seeking SLP assistant certification.

  • Individualized attention. Classes are small and held primarily face-to-face. Each student will be assigned an SLP mentor to help with academic and professional goals.

  • Interprofessional experiences. The SLP track includes interdisciplinary courses with students from the Health Sciences track and opportunities to observe in Salus University's other clinical facilities, TEI, PEI and OTI.
