Off-Campus Resident Feature: Dr. Alex Kass

Halfway through his master’s studies, Alex Kass, OD, ‘23Resident, found himself burned out from his science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies and felt bleak about his future career options. “I was tired of working in front of a computer all day every day and didn’t like the career options I saw in front of me,” said Dr. Kass. As a result, he decided to take his studies and career in another direction by pursuing a Doctor of Optometry degree.

“I could tell how much they all liked being optometrists, how much they personally invested themselves in this profession and were passionate about it, and how passionate they were about teaching it as well,” he said. “Optometry school felt like being welcomed into a family.”

His career switch landed him in a combined ocular disease and primary care residency at Erie VA Medical Center, through the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University’s residency match program. And, although uncertain of his next steps after the completion of his residency this summer, Dr. Kass has been grateful for his experience thus far, and “can feel [himself] becoming a better and better doctor every day.”
