Edward Melman, OD ‘81

Alumni from all our programs recently provided memories from their time as students here on campus. Below is one excerpt from the collection.

Edward Melman headshot1I attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) because it was the closest optometry school to my mom, who had a stroke and was in a nursing home in Atlantic City, New Jersey. I was the first in my family to attend PCO and I lived on campus.

I remember the hard work I put into my classes, making friends with the other students and interacting with the faculty. I had the privilege of being student editor of the school newspaper. My degree has helped me have a successful career where I could work with my sister Anita, who was a nurse and optician.

My advice to future alumni is to work hard, keep up with the literature, look toward the future, and be proud of our profession. It's important that it's not a job but a calling to care for the health and functions of the vision system.

I'm grateful for the friends and family I made during my time at PCO, and I'd like to give a shout out to my friends Ron Melton, OD ‘81, and Randall Thomas, OD ‘81, who became clinical inspirations in the OD world.
