Recently, Salus University President Dr. Michael H. Mittelman was inducted as a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. His membership was made official at a special ceremony during the organization’s College Night.
“It’s a true honor to be a selected as a Fellow of such a prestigious organization,” he said. “The College’s mission to continually improve healthcare education and the public’s health is something I’ve dedicated my career to and is the essence of what we strive for daily at Salus.”
Fellows are nominated by two current Fellows of the College, and their credentials are evaluated by two committees before being selected by the College’s Board of Trustees. Once chosen, they join the ranks of historical figures who have served as Fellows.
“One of the memorable parts of the evening was, as a new inductee, getting to sign my name in a ledger that dated back to the establishment of the College and actually has Benjamin Rush’s signature in it,” Dr. Mittelman said. As a Founding Father of the United States, the physician, politician, social reformer, humanitarian and educator also signed the Declaration of Independence.
Founded in 1787, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia is one of the oldest professional medical organizations in the country. With more than 1,500 Fellows, the College’s mission is to advance the cause of health while upholding the ideals and heritage of medicine. It is also home to the Mütter Museum and the Historical Medical Library.
