First-Year Speech-Language Pathology Student: Clarissa Beck

Clarissa Beck sitting outside Hi I’m Clarissa Beck! I’m a current first-year, second-semester Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) graduate student here at Salus. I completed a post-bacc program at La Salle, as I decided to switch careers from accounting to SLP. I decided to make the switch because I wanted to help and support others in a more meaningful and impactful way.

I’m very happy to be here at Salus and am going to walk you through one of my typical days here! Tuesdays are my busiest day of the Spring semester because on Tuesdays I have both class and my clinic group.

My day starts around 6 a.m. and once I get up, I start my coffee right away and then take my two dogs outside. When we come back inside, I feed them and then grab my coffee. I typically like to read for 20-30 minutes each morning. Right now, I am reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Once I’m done reading, I get ready to head to school. I try to leave by 7 a.m. because classes start at 8 a.m. and I’m about an hour away.

The first class of the day is Research Design which runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. On this particular Tuesday in class, we went over a research article and we discussed questions we would want to address when appraising the article. Our next class is dysphagia, and on this Tuesday, we had our third interval exam which ran from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Typically, class runs untill 1 p.m. and we have lectures on all things related to swallowing and swallowing difficulty. Some of our recent lectures were on pediatric swallowing, which was very cool to learn about!

Clarissa and classmate wearing white coatsI also work as a graduate assistant for the Office of Admissions on campus, so on this Tuesday since we were done with class early, I went to do some work there from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. At 1 p.m. I then went to our cadaver lab. Typically, cadaver labs are on Wednesday evenings, but this was a makeup session, that ran from 1 to 2 p.m.

On Tuesdays, my clinic group is with KI-preschool which is located right across the street from Salus and runs from around 3 to 6 p.m. At the preschool, we lead a group of about fifteen 3–4-year-olds in various speech and language-facilitating activities. On this particular Tuesday, I had a whole free hour before I had to be at KI, so the other KI group members and I sat outside together and enjoyed the beautiful Spring day.

Once home at around 7 p.m., I eat dinner and relax with my pups. I also typically watch some TV shows such as Abbott Elementary and Superstore. I enjoy comedies! Then I may try and do some homework or will just go to bed. I’m typically asleep by 10 p.m. and thankfully get to sleep in on my Wednesday mornings!
