Salus at Drexel University represents a diversified group of graduate healthcare professions. The SP Program provides activities for all colleges and programs offered through the University to enhance learner training, expand expertise, and demonstrate skill mastery. We service learners through each program listed below:
- Physician Assistant (PA)
- Occupational Therapy (OT)
- Speech Language Pathology (SLP)
- Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P)
- Blindness and Low Vision Studies (BLVS)
- Osborne College of Audiology (AUD)
- Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO)
- Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Practice (IPECP)
In preparing for the future, we plan to collaborate with external universities and healthcare facilities and host events. That information will be added as we grow with the standardized patient program.
What types of SP events do we participate in?
There are TWO Types of Assessments:
- Formative (not graded)
- These assessments monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback used by instructors to improve their teaching and for students to improve their learning.
- Summative (graded)
- These assessments evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.
Types of SP events:
- Demonstrations/Small or Large Groups/Workshops (formative)
- These assessments are for instructional purposes. The learner/group of learners are able to practice interviewing a patient, completing physical examinations, assessing different clinical skills, and demonstrate clinical reasoning. The SP may or may not provide a written SP checklist and/or verbal feedback.
- Individual Encounters (formative or summative)
- These assessments evaluate student’s ability to effectively demonstrate communication, clinical skills, and competency. The learner interacts with an SP in a one-on-one, individual encounter in a specified setting. After the encounter is over, the learner may or may not complete a patient note and the SP may or may not provide a written SP checklist and/or verbal feedback.
- Hybrid Encounters (formative or summative)
- These assessments evaluate student’s ability to effectively demonstrate communication, clinical skills, and competency. The learner interacts with an SP and/or manikin/partial task trainer in a one-on-one, individual encounter in a specified setting. After the encounter is over, the learner may or may not complete a patient note and the SP may or may not provide a written SP checklist and/or verbal feedback.
- Clinical Competency-Based/Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) (summative)
- These assessments evaluate student’s ability to effectively demonstrate clinical skills in a standardized medical scenario. The learner interacts with an SP in a one-on-one, individual encounter in a clinical setting. After the encounter is over, the learner completes a patient note and the SP completes a written SP checklist. The SP may or may not provide verbal feedback.
