First-Year Audiology Student: Riley Abernethy

Riley Abernethy and her life at SalusHi everyone. My name is Riley Abernethy and I am a first-year Audiology student. I am originally from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the Little League World Series for you baseball lovers!

I graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders in the spring of 2020. While at PSU, I was an ambassador for the College of Health and Human Development and was its chair for public relations. After graduating, I took a year off and worked as an audiology technician at a private practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (even though I am in Philly, Pittsburgh has my heart).

I chose Salus because of their early clinical experience and interdisciplinary training. Each program forms such well-rounded clinicians ready to take on the real world as soon as they walk out of the doors as a Salus graduate. Salus itself also gives you that "home away from home" feeling; it provides you comfort in knowing that everyone here only wants the best for you.

School days these days are a little different than normal, with classes mainly online due to COVID. A day here at Salus can vary — you could have just class one day, class and lab, class and clinic, or clinic and lab. Since for the time being I'm normally home for class, I decided to take you through a day of where I got to go to campus.

8 a.m.: Wake up and eat breakfast.

9 a.m.: Watch a recorded lecture for class.

10:30 a.m.: Get ready to head to campus.

Noon: Eat some lunch then head to campus.

12:30 p.m.: Arrive at campus and go to a room in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and meet up with my friends to study.

2 p.m.: Log onto our online class.

3:30 p.m.: Attend a meeting for the research I am doing with an audiologist at school (this isn't an everyday thing but I thought I would add it in).

5 p.m.: Eat dinner and relax with my friends.

7 p.m.: Head to the lab.

8:30 p.m.: Arrive back home, put on my pjs, and relax for the night!
