Last month the University’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) and Occupational Therapy (OT) departments, along with the Breastfeeding Resource Center held a presentation entitled "An Interdisciplinary Approach to Breastfeeding" at Theraplay's Continuing Education Day in Villanova, PA.
Representing the University’s College of Education and Rehabilitation were SLP assistant professor, Dr. Kyomi Gregory, CCC-SLP, faculty member Ms. Leah Morton, MA, CCC-SLP; OT program director Dr. Lauren Sponsellor, OTR/L, faculty member Dr. Caitlyn Foy, OTR/L, and student Tricia Biel-Goebel ’16OT. Also part of the interdisciplinary team was lactation consultant Colette Acker BS, IBCLC, and director of the Breastfeeding Resource Center. The center, a non-profit organization committed to providing expert clinical and educational breastfeeding services, is located in Abington, PA, not far from the Elkins Park campus.
Participants at the well-attended, three-hour workshop were shown how to recognize and interpret methods of infant communication related to breastfeeding. They also received firsthand experience in the important contribution various healthcare professions play in supporting breastfeeding mothers.
