2017 PCO Quiz Bowl

PCO Quiz Bowl WinnerCongratulations are in order for Celeste Gomez ‘19OD, this year’s winner of the Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) Quiz Bowl. Celeste took the top spot on Friday, March 17, during the annual event held at the Hafter Student Community Center.

“It was great to sit alongside my peers and exercise some of the knowledge we’ve acquired over the past almost two years,” Celeste said. “It feels pretty surreal to win.”

With her win, Celeste will represent Salus PCO at the 2018 Varilux ® Optometry Student Bowl in Denver held during Optometry's Meeting, the annual American Optometric Association (AOA) conference. As is tradition, this summer Celeste will also attend this year’s conference in Washington, D.C., to get an idea of what to expect when it’s her turn to compete. Last year’s Quiz Bowl winner Leslie Gauntlett ‘18OD will represent Salus PCO this year and battle against 23 other schools and colleges of optometry for the coveted title of national champion.

PCO Quiz BowlAll Quiz Bowl attendees received a raffle ticket upon entrance. And, prizes included American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) and Salus PCO merchandise along with various gift cards donated by Essilor and the Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA). The grand prize was a $1,000 travel grant from the POA to attend this summer’s AOA conference. Second year Optometry student, Colleen Gibson, who also participated in the Quiz Bowl, was selected for the top raffle prize, which she thought was  “absolutely awesome.”

The Salus PCO chapter of AOSA, with Allison Guindon ‘19OD at the helm as trustee, planned the Quiz Bowl, which was emceed by assistant professor Alissa Coyne, OD ’10.
