The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is typically full of students reviewing difficult concepts from class, textbook pages turning and keyboards clicking. But on Friday, December 8, from 12-2 p.m. students will be able to take a break from studying and enjoy the company of therapy animals from the Montgomery County SPCA thanks to the LRC staff.
According to the center’s staff, bringing therapy animals to educational institutions is becoming common practice because of the added health benefits for students especially during exams and finals.
“Many colleges and universities, such as University of Pennsylvania, are implementing animal-assisted activities into their library programs,” they said. “The University of Connecticut’s library currently offers therapy dogs for physical and emotional support for students during times of anxiety.”
The team hopes students will enjoy some relaxation as they interact with the animals.
“As a way to relieve stress, the students can pet or play with a therapy animal,” they said. “Even if it’s just for a moment, studies show the social and therapeutic benefits of animal interaction.”
Planned visitors include golden retriever Faith and rabbit Jack, both from the Montgomery County SPCA. In preparation for the event, the LRC is also collecting pet supplies for donation to the SPCA.
