OLE Program Offers a Glimpse into Optometry Careers

OLE ProgramGrowing up, Erica Tronetti spent a lot of time in an ophthalmologist’s office due to an eye disorder. And, even when she got better, she said, “I didn’t want to leave!”

Tronetti, who attends Washington and Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, was one of 28 college students who recently participated in the Optometry Learning Experience at Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO). For the past 39 years, students from undergraduate institutions have been given the opportunity to investigate the academic study and experiences associated with the Doctor of Optometry program at Salus PCO in addition to the many career opportunities available to optometrists.

“I’ve always had an interest in biology and science – my mom is an ophthalmologist,” Tronetti said. “This was a great opportunity to look at career options.”

The program includes lectures, tours, counseling and laboratory sessions as well as hands-on clinical skills training.

“Many [participants] have written us to say that their experience on campus has solidified their desire to become an optometrist and/or Salus student in the future,” noted Melissa Tran, MA, associate director of Admissions.

This year’s participants are currently undergraduate students at SUNY’s Binghamton, Albany and Oswego campuses, Rowan University, Shippensburg University, Saint Joseph’s University, Montclair State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Juniata College, Arcadia University, Widener University, Ursinus College, University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Elizabethtown College.

Students attended either the January 8-10 or January 10-12 session, with programs held at the Elkins Park campus and at The Eye Institute, PCO’s clinical facility in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.
