SLI Launches Transgender Support Group

raise your voice flyerThe University’s Speech-Language Institute (SLI) recently launched ‘Raise Your Voice’ - a new support group to assist those in the transgender community with voice and communication skills.

The support group aims to be a resource for members of the transgender community as well as a teaching ground for Speech-Language Pathology students in the University’s College of Education and Rehabilitation.

“Transgender voice assessment and intervention is a specialty area in the field of speech-language pathology and we are truly lucky to be able to give this experience to our students,” said SLI clinical director, Robert Serianni, MS, CCC-SLP.

The benefit has been two-fold. “I gained new knowledge of a speech-language pathologist’s role in treating members of the transgender community,” Max Saeger ’19SLP said. “This support group will serve as a link between the Salus Community, the transgender community, and the greater Philadelphia area.”

This support group allows Speech-Language Pathology students to “gain insights and skills that will benefit their clinical practice within culturally and linguistically diverse aspects of our field,” Serianni said.
