Thomas L. Lewis Honored With Career Achievement Award

Thomas L. Lewis, OD, PhD, president emeritus of Salus University and professor in the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), was recently honored with the 2018 Career Achievement Award by the Review of Optometry at the recent Southeastern Educational Congress of Optometry (SECO) conference in Atlanta, Ga.

In accepting the award, Dr. Lewis commented that he was humbled by the honor. He shared words of encouragement and humor with those in attendance:

“If everything seems under control, you are going too slow.”

“I could agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.”

This is the latest accolade bestowed on Dr. Lewis for his contributions to the profession of optometry and to optometric education. In 2009, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the profession.

Dr. Lewis received his Doctor of Optometry degree from PCO, and his PhD in human anatomy from Thomas Jefferson University. Additionally, he completed a National Eye Institute post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

He is a past president and fellow of the American Academy of Optometry as well as a past president of ASCO and the Partnership Foundation for Optometric Education. He is also a member of the Optometric Hall of Fame of the American Optometric Association. He has published extensively in optometric and other professional journals and has also made numerous presentations to the American Academy of Optometry and other professional groups.
