Radhika Aravamudhan, PhD, interim dean of the University’s Osborne College of Audiology, was recently elected as the vice chair for audiology for the Council on the Academic Accreditation (CAA) Board. She will start in January 2019.
The CAA strives to serve the public through promoting excellence in graduate education of audiologists and speech-language pathologists. It is dedicated to quality audiology and speech-language pathology programs’ success in preparing future professionals. Through the use of peer review, the CAA establishes accreditation standards and facilitates continuous quality improvement of its programs. Graduates of CAA-accredited programs are educated in a core set of skills and knowledge required for entry into independent professional practice.
Dr. Aravamudhan has previously served on several other committees for the CAA, as well as serving on the CAA board since the fall of 2015. She is currently finishing up her three-year term as a member of the Council’s Academic-Audiology operations, a position to which she was elected to in 2016.
She believes taking on the new role as vice chair will help her to better understand accreditation and the issues associated with the programs the CAA frequently faces. The term as vice chair will allow for her to identify any issues requiring the Council’s deliberation, provide recommendations to the chair regarding members and act as a liaison to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) committees and task forces.
“I believe I’m lucky to be selected to serve on CAA Board,” Dr. Aravamudhan said. “I have grown both as a person and as a professional [while on the Board]. It helps me see the big picture that influences the audiology profession and education both nationally and internationally.”
In her new role as vice chair, Dr. Aravamudhan hopes to not only promote the Osborne College of Audiology, but also bring audiology-related issues and their relation to accreditation standards front and center.
