In the early morning of Thursday, January 24, even though rain was pouring down outside, the energy in the Loews Philadelphia Hotel was electric. Philadelphia’s top constituents came out for Invest: Philadelphia's World Class Minds panel and launch conference, which was held as part of a celebration of the inaugural edition of Invest: Philadelphia Magazine.
After an introduction from Philadelphia’s Director of Commerce, Harold Epps, Capital Analytics Associates hosted three in-depth panel discussions - one of which was higher education in Philadelphia. It was this discussion that Dr. Michael Mittelman, president of Salus joined Craig Carnaroli, executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania; and Dr. Guy Generals, president of the Community College of Philadelphia, on stage to discuss hot topics such as student debt and accessibility in higher education.
“It was an honor to be a part of this panel,” said Dr. Mittelman.
Carnaroli talked about Penn’s involvement in the community, Dr. Mittelman discussed the importance of making sure students are ready to join the workforce directly after graduation, and Dr. Generals spoke to the importance of switching the mindset of education to a K-16 focus.
In addition to Dr. Mittelman discussed the challenges and opportunities of Salus being a graduate-only health science school in Philadelphia and expressed his opinions about what he is perhaps most passionate about: the burdens of financial costs to students, and how Salus works tirelessly to continue to see the most return on investment for its students while working within a system that needs to be revamped.
