As part of her duties as the executive director of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Consortium for Higher Education (SEPCHE), Beth Moy described visiting the Salus University campus as “plugging into a powerhouse.”
Salus is a member of SEPCHE, a consortium established in 1993 representing more than 20,000 students in small universities located across all five counties of metropolitan Philadelphia.
Moy never forgot experiencing Salus for the first time.
“You can feel the purpose, focus and energy that faculty and students bring to the work. It’s palpable and energizing,” she said.
Now she will have a chance to experience that feeling every day as the new chief of staff at Salus University, effective Dec. 9, 2021. She follows Brian Zuckerman, JD in that position.
Even before her visit to campus, Moy was aware of the “community of excellence” she perceived at Salus.
“These are top-notch faculty doing really innovative work,” she said, noting as one example the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) partnership with The Inspiration Center in Belize. “I’m impressed with the work that is going on here.
Moy earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1992 from the University of Texas, Austin, and a Master of Social Work degree in Administration and Planning from Temple University in 1997.
She served as both director of special projects and director of constituent services for Philadelphia City Councilwoman at Large Happy Fernandez and then as fundraising coordinator and scheduler for Fernandez’s mayoral campaign in 1998-99.
Moy joined Moore College of Art and Design in 1999 as director of development and capital campaign director, then in 2005 moved over to academic planning and continuing education.
In 2009, she joined SEPCHE as its executive director. In addition to Salus, the consortium includes Arcadia University, Cabrini University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Holy Family University, Immaculata University, Neumann University and Rosemont College. The group’s mission is to improve the quality and efficiency of academic programming, student access, faculty development, institutional operations and community outreach through a range of shared activities, services, technology and information. She also currently holds a seat on the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board.
Moy was attracted to the position at Salus for several reasons, including the opportunity to work with University president Michael H. Mittelman, OD ‘80, MPH, MBA, FAAO, FACHE, whom she first met through SEPCHE.
“Dr. Mittelman is an amazing ambassador for Salus,” she said. “He’s a compelling and visionary leader and he’s not afraid to experiment. Seeing the pace he keeps and his decision-making process, I’m attracted to the experience he brings beyond higher ed. I think I will learn a lot with him.”
In addition, the opportunity to work with the University’s cabinet and administration was a big draw. “There are few cabinets that are as diverse as this one,” she said. “They’re a super-talented, high performing team.”
And, finally, the opportunity for professional growth was equally attractive. “Working on the operation side to support the work of faculty and students will give me a different view on the University,” she said. “I’m excited for the chance to work with a team of really experienced leaders on the operation side. I look forward to learning with them, and I hope to make a meaningful contribution to Salus.”
Moy said the early stages of her new position will include building relationships with faculty and staff with an eye on connecting her network to Salus for growth opportunities.
“Students are getting an amazing education that integrates interdisciplinary expertise with cultural competence, creativity and flexibility — all the things we want emerging graduates to have as leading healthcare practitioners,” she said. “I am moved by the mission at Salus, I see how well Salus does what it does, and I’m excited to be able to contribute to it.”
Outside of work, she enjoys being outdoors and hiking and biking around the Wissahickon Valley, which she describes as “my salvation” during the pandemic. She also loves to read, travel and spend time with her children, Sophia and Andrew, and large, extended family.
For his part, Dr. Mittelman is happy to have a new Chief of Staff on board.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Beth will be joining our team at Salus,” he said. “Her wealth of experience working in higher education as well as her unparalleled leadership and communication skills will help bring Salus to our next level of excellence.”
