Did you know that the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (PSCO), the founding college before later named Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), once had a basketball team that rivaled such schools like Temple University? It’s true!
In 1922, the Athletic Association was organized and just within a few years of its existence, brought the sport life of PCO from obscurity to a plane equal to, if not in advance, of other colleges and universities in Philadelphia.
In 1926, the basketball team represented PSCO in the City College League, composed of six teams each representing leading colleges of Philadelphia. PSCO’s basketball team finished first in the division, and placed third overall. Games were held at Central YMCA, and PSCO often had a cheering section of the audience that made other schools envious.
Other sports were also part of the Athletic Association, including track, tennis, golf, baseball, and bowling, though these teams were not as victorious as the basketball team.
