From Pond to Paris and Beyond: A Mascot’s Journey

By: Sal the Salamander

I was born on a sweltering summer day in Philadelphia’s own Fairmount Park in July 2008. After earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in mascot-ology, I sought to further advance my education. It had always been my dream to attend Salus University. Upon my acceptance, I moved into a new pond-view apartment with only one dilemma: with the large variety of programs offered at the University, I just could not decide which one I was most passionate about. That is why I began studying every program the University has to offer. I eventually earned several doctorates and master degrees. My ambition and positive attitude earned me the best position that Salus University could offer: I became mascot on August 15, 2016.

I have to admit that being the University’s mascot has its perks. Students, faculty, and staff alike have been kind enough to bring me along on a multitude of trips. The best part about traveling is that I never know what to expect. I could be coming along for hors d'oeuvres at the Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop, or lunch at Fiesta Pizza or Iron Hill Brewery all within a 15-minute drive from campus. If I am lucky, my friends will bring me along to grab dessert at Bredenbeck’s Bakery & Ice Cream Parlor in Germantown. Although I am a true Pennsylvanian at heart, I love visiting new states and cities across the country and globe. I have been to New York, Austin, Texas, Chicago, Ill. , Assateague Island in Maryland, the Institute of International Education in Florida, and the University of Houston, Texas. History has always been one of my favorite subjects, which is why I made sure to visit the Alamo when I went to Texas. The farthest places I have traveled to so far have been Paris, France, Greece and Panama on a special trip with our Physician Assistant students. I still remember how shocked I was when I stood at my four inch tall stature and looked up at the enormous Eiffel Tower, I assure you that it is way bigger than it appears in photographs! The service trip to Panama was one of my favorite experiences because I got to meet so many different people and work closely with talented Salus faculty and students.

Whenever I have free time from my mascot duties, or continuing education courses, I love to stop by Starbucks for a quick coffee or cookie. I know how stressful classes and work can be, so I try to make time for myself, and am also an avid cricket player and football enthusiast. I can’t wait to get back down to Lincoln Financial Field for a Philadelphia Eagles game this season!

I sure hope my friends will think of bringing me along on their next trip, as I love going places and taking photos! They can check my travel schedule with the Communications office
