Many people have been part of the proud history of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus University. Alumni, faculty, and friends of the College helped establish PCO as a pioneer and leader in the field of optometric education and the profession of optometry. The following people - highlighted on Medal Mondays - were honored on May 20, 1995 at the 75th Anniversary Gala Celebration for their outstanding contributions to the College and the field of optometry and vision care.
At the Centennial Gala Celebration on April 27, 2019, additional alumni, faculty, and friends will be honored.
After graduating from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in 1943, Dr. Robert Johnson served in the Army Medical Group stationed in England from 1943 to 1945. He opened his private practice in Latrobe, Pa., and practiced for 54 years. He was a member of the College’s Board of Trustees from 1952 to 1980, retiring as Chairman. Highlights during Dr. Johnson’s chairmanship included the adoption of the College’s tenure and honorary degree policies. He received the College’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 1989. He also retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve after 21 years, with the rank of commander. Dr. Johnson was also a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA) and the Western Optometric Society. He served his community and his profession through his involvement with the Latrobe Lions Club.
Dr. Johnson passed away in May 2016.
