President’s Medal Recipients

Many people have been part of the proud history of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and Salus University.  Alumni, faculty, and friends of the College helped establish PCO as a pioneer and leader in the field of optometric education and the profession of optometry. The following people - highlighted on Medal Mondays - were honored on May 20, 1995 at the 75th Anniversary Gala Celebration for their outstanding contributions to the College and the field of optometry and vision care.

At the Centennial Gala Celebration on April 27, 2019, additional alumni, faculty, and friends will be honored.

J. Donald Kratz, OD ’37, FAAO
(1917-1992)

J. Donald KratzDr. Kratz joined the faculty in 1937, rising to Professor of Optometry and Department Chair.  During his lifetime, Dr. Kratz unfailingly served the College in a number of capacities. He was Chairman of the Faculty and Second Vice President of the College for many years.  He was named Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1980. Dr. Kratz’s long tenure on the College Board of Trustees began in 1981 and concluded at the time of his death in 1992.  He held the American Academy of Optometry Presidency from 1965 to 1967 and was the fifth PCO graduate serving in this prestigious position. Dr. Kratz was named Alumnus of the Year in 1966.
