Centennial
While this month has been without snow (so far), that was not the case in the January of 1996. Within the first week of the New Year, Philadelphia was hit by the biggest snowstorm in the city’s history. A record-breaking 30.7 inches fell at an alarming rate – 27.6 inches in just 24 hours. The snow was so extensive, that plowing caused massive snow piles, leaving city officials with no other choice but to begin dumping snow into the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers.
