Salus University's founding college, Pennsylvania State College of Optometry, had its original campus in the Spring Garden neighborhood of Philadelphia in the early 1900s. In 1920, the optometric and ophthalmological clinics each occupied one room in the original College building on the 1800 block of Spring Garden Street and operated two afternoons a week. Today, the Keystone Mountains Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters occupies the address.
In 1924, PSCO completed the construction of a building extension to house the new clinical facility located at 1810 Brandywine Street. Less than a decade later in 1932, PSCO’s growth required a move to a large, 32-acre campus in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia and the Spring Garden Street building became used solely as a clinical facility. Today, the original Spring Garden Street and 1810 Brandywine Street no longer exist but PCO’s legacy still remains.
