Why did you chose your particular profession?
While writing a master's thesis in English Literature, I found I needed vision therapy, so I became fascinated and took the prerequisites to become an optometrist.
What are some of your favorite memories from Salus/PCO – favorite classes, professors, classmates, clinical experiences, co-workers?
I enjoyed working with Audrey Smith, Ann Barber, Tony DeSantis and others on grants for Feinbloom Center. I also had a wonderful time working with Dr. Tom Lewis and helping him draft information for the Middle States Accreditation. I also enjoyed studying neuroanatomy with Dr. Lorraine Lombardi.
Tell us about your life after Salus/PCO – where do/did you practice, how long?
I have had a private practice specializing in behavioral optometry and vision therapy in Boulder County, Colo. since my graduation. My office in Boulder burned down on December 23, 1998, and since then I have practiced in Niwot, Colo, between Boulder and Longmont. I hope to begin the process of retiring to spend more time in our mountain home.
As Salus/PCO celebrates 100 years in 2019, what are your hopes for the college in the next 100 years?
That ODs will realize that an optometrist is valued not just for medical knowledge, but we also need intuition and compassion to round out our patient care.
