Why did you chose your particular profession?
I found audiology as an undergraduate speech-language pathology major at St. John’s University in NY. I found working with the different test equipment was more fitting to my learning style. Learning different test techniques with all the age groups as well as setting up rehabilitation plans was a truly exceptional challenge! I've never regretted my decision to choose Audiology! I also have to thank the US Navy for helping me, too!
Tell me about your time at Salus/PCO. Why did you choose to study there?
I graduated Hofstra with my Masters in Audiology in 1977. I always wanted to return to school to get my doctorate in Audiology but with personal commitments and running a full time practice it was almost impossible. I met Dr. George Osborne when he was trying to get the Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology organized (1992). I had just started the New Jersey Academy of Audiology so he sought my advice. Dr. Osborne became my mentor. He knew exactly where the profession was going into the 21st century and the distance learning program at PCO/Salus was my key to getting that sought after doctorate! I started in 2001. Dr. Osborne gave me opportunities to expand my knowledge base, teach pharmacology/ototoxicity and he opened doors for me to expand my research interests in adverse drug reactions and patient management.
What are some of your favorite memories from Salus/PCO – favorite classes, professors, classmates, clinical experiences, co-workers?
Meeting my online professors was very exciting: (the late) David Lipscomb, Tom Thunder, Brenda Berge to name a few. Best memory: getting a phone call from Dr. Osborne 30 minutes after I submitted my comprehensive examination: "Is this Dr. DiSogra?" Priceless!
Tell me about your life after Salus/PCO – where do/did you practice, how long?
I had a private practice in Audiology from 1985 to 2015 and it was so nice not to having to correct my patients anymore when they called me "Doc." There was truly a sense of great pride in achieving this academic degree! The highlight of my career came in 2013 when I was recognized as Alumnus of the Year for Audiology at Salus.
As Salus/PCO celebrates 100 years in 2019, what are your hopes for the college in the next 100 years?
My hope is that Salus continues to maintain its high academic standards in the Audiology program and become a leader in the field for Audiologists to obtain prescriptive rights.
